Growing up a girl in the early 90s, I was taught to negate large parts of my femininity, to break with the tradition of women generating textiles and passing related knowledge down to their daughters. Instead of opening up this valuable craft to all genders, it became relegated to the nooks and crannies of the no-longer-useful.
The Cloth Series is the result of my attempt to reclaim this past I had become disconnected from. Resurrecting witnesses of past centuries from museums’ archives to become my avatars in a body of work that connects the skill I treasure most with the skill I studied hard to obtain. Textile craft meets code to wrap pieces of me represented by photographs of women from the 1850s in a warm coat made of virtual cloth.
